The Peak District is a popular tourist area of Midland / Northern England and the location of England's first National Park. Why not stroll through a hay meadow or touch a gritstone tor? Come and explore for yourself some of the amazing wildlife and geology of the Peak District. Bagshaw Cavern Bagshawe Cavern is a largely natural cave system which was discovered by lead miners in 1806. It is open to the public on summer weekends as a show cave. Churnet Valley Railway The Churnet Valley Railway operates from Leekbrook via Cheddleton (5km south of Leek) and Froghall to Oakamoor, a distance of 11km, along the deep and picturesque valley of the River Churnet. The railway was once the North Staffordshire Railway (known as 'Owd Knotty' due to its emblem of the Staffordshire Knot) which ran from North Rode to Uttoxeter via Leek. The railway was closed as part of the Beeching cuts, between 1968 and 1970, though freight trains ran on part of the line until 1988. The Wind in the Willows Attraction This brand new attraction brings the classic adventure story to life. Visitors can climb into Toad's Caravan, follow Mole & Ratty on their lazy journey down the river and see Wild World - the story of real moles, voles, toads and badgers. Peveril Castle 2005 marked the opening of the new state-of-the-art English Heritage Visitor Centre at Castleton - which houses a display of artefacts found during excavations inside the castle grounds, and which could be described as the first new gate-house at Peveril Castle for almost a thousand years! In addition to the complete history of the castle, there are also graphic displays of hunting, riding and feasting, as well as a tactile model of the castle and grounds. A shop on site sells English Heritage merchandise including books and gifts, as well as ice cream and soft drinks - and the new centre has toilets, and disabled access with a lift up to the first-floor exhibitions. Gulliver's Kingdom A theme park for young families, overlooking Matlock Bath. Attractions include a chair-lift, log flume, mine train, lazy river ride, dodgems, animated Gullivers Travels ride and several family chows. Restaurant and shop facilities. |
